Macquarie Financial opens Vancouver office to serve key Western ...

Mortgage lender Macquarie Financial Ltd. is opening a Vancouver office to provide regional underwriting service to mortgage brokers in British Columbia and Alberta. The opening marks the latest expansion for Macquarie Financial as it rolls out a model focused on better serving mortgage brokers across the country. The office will be located in the Park Place building at 666 Burrard St.

With offices in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and now Vancouver, Macquarie Financial offers residential mortgages through a network of professional mortgage brokers who focus on building long-term relationships with borrowers. Brokers have access to Macquarie Financial preferred rates that are consistently lower than bank posted rates, that they in turn pass on to borrowers without the need to negotiate.

Possible help for homeowners

A growing number of homebuyers are finding themselves in over their heads after falling prey to what State Senator Mike Fasano calls mortgage schemes."You weren't paying principle up front, only interest," Fasano said. "Or you're paying no interest at all and it builds up over so many years or the rate changes to an exorbitant amount that you can't afford it." Fasano said the practice of misleading or luring consumers into mortgages they can't afford is so common that the dominoes are starting to fall. .

Ice melts off curling rink after final bonspiel

Mixed curling was front and centre this past weekend, with teams involved in competitions at both the provincial and local levels.

The B.C. Mixed Curling Championships wrapped up last Saturday in Duncan. Jason Montgomery's team was the hometown favourite and represented the host club well. Montgomery finished with a 5-2 record in the round-robin portion, then won a pair of playoff games to qualify for the provincial final. There, the Island representative bowed 10-3 to the Bryan Miki from the Royal City Club of New Westminster. Miki, who played on Greg McAulay's Canadian and world championship men's team in 2000, now advances to the Canadian Mixed Championships to be held next November.

Meanwhile, the final event of the local curling season was held last weekend, as the Nanaimo Curling Club hosted its Spring Fling mixed bonspiel.
